Animals

'Wall mounted, like ancient guardians, Mark's animal sculptures seem to look down at the viewer, or back to some distant past. Their arabesque animal curves contrast with the rectangular form of the supporting block. They have restrained monumentality, expressing both strength and pathos.'

"Horizontal or vertical bands of colour are juxtaposed with curves... veils of light or shade reveal or conceal a landscape, and the presence of the viewer with in it."

Most of the work in this gallery is watercolour. Mark enjoys using a medium with a very traditional reputation in a modern way.

He says, 'Most of the work in this gallery was either painted on site or started in the field and then modified in the studio. This element of direct observation is very important, it informs the more abstract work. The veil of stripes, visible in some of the work, is a comment on consciousness... we see everything though the veil of our thoughts.'
