In 2014 I won a national competition for a commission for ‘The Art of Remembering’ at the Rheged Gallery, Cumbria. The exhibition examined how the First World War has been memorialized and explored its significance, today. This response, the Memory Vessel series, was inspired by historic photographs of the naval war. The work comments on the pathos of arms race and the folly of imperialism, and stands in counterpoint to my work concerning nature.
